PLYMOUTH SOUND - DIRECTION

TRANSAT AIR DISPLAY 1 MAY 2016

1. This is a direction by the Queen’s Harbour Master Plymouth pursuant to the Dockyard Port of Plymouth Order 1999. It is issued jointly with The Cattewater Harbour Commissioners and Harbour Master.

2. An air display and parachute drop in support of the TRANSAT Yacht Race is programmed to take place at Plymouth on Sunday 1 May 2016. This PLNTM gives information of timings for the air display and traffic control, and directs mariners accordingly.

3. Timetable

Sun 1 May

1350 - 1430 Air Display and Parachute Areas closed to all vessels
1400 – 1410 Solo aerobatics display
1412 – 1420 Brietling Wing Walkers
1425 – 1445 Parachute drop area closed to all vessels
1430 - 1435 Red Devils Parachute display
1435 – 1445 Recovery of parachutist
1445 Displays complete - restrictions lifted

4. Air Display Areas. The areas as shown on the chart extract at Annex A:

a. Air Display Area (1350 – 1430) - An area in front of The Hoe and the Cattewater bounded in the Sound by Millbay Pier Lt, Drake’s Island eastern shore and Dunstone Point and in the Cattewater, by Fisher’s Nose, Queen Anne’s Battery Breakwater and to the east by a line between the eastern end of Cattedown Wharves and the eastern end of Turnchapel Point pontoons.

Parachute Drop Area (1425 – 1445) - An area in the entrance to the Cattewater bounded by the western end of Mountbatten Breakwater, RPCYC Flag Staff, Fisher’s Nose, Queen Anne’s Battery Breakwater, Victoria Wharves Jetty Lt and Mount Batten Centre pontoon.

b. No vessel can remain within these restricted areas in Plymouth Sound and Cobbler Channel either underway or at anchor during the closed periods listed above.

5. Spectator areas

a. Spectators afloat may view the displays clear of the activated area.

b. Official steward craft will patrol the area boundaries and invite spectators or other craft to remain clear of the Air Display Area. Steward craft will display a blue flag.

c. Policing craft will be in attendance to direct vessels to keep clear if necessary. Mariners are reminded that failure to comply with official direction by the Officers of the Queen’s Harbour Master, which includes MOD Police Officers, Cattewater Harbour Master, and Sutton Harbour Lock keepers, may result in prosecution.





6. Vessel Traffic Control

a. All mariners are to note and observe the restrictions on movement in the paragraphs below.

b. During the air display mariners wishing to proceed from the Plym, Sutton Harbour or the Cattewater to seaward of the Air Display Areas are advised to do so in sufficient time before access to the Sound is suspended. Sutton Lock will be closed for the duration of the display.

c. Throughout the displays, access to/from seaward for small craft to/from the Hamoaze and River Tamar is permitted passing through The Bridge channel.
