1.  NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN by the Queen's Harbour Master Portsmouth that the Maritime and Coastguard Agency has published the following advice with regard to the safe and correct disposal of time expired flares. 

2.  HM Coastguard no longer provides this as a standard service. Some alternative options are to:

Check with your flare supplier or local liferaft service agent who might be prepared to take them back; or
Your local marina as they may have disposal arrangements.

3.  Never dump flares in household rubbish, garden waste or public litter bins. This is not a safe way to dispose of them, bringing risks to yourself and your family and to those who move and dispose of such litter. Remember it is an offence to dump flares at sea.

4. In addition, the MCA offers a last resort disposal service for the public. Please contact by telephone first before visiting in person.  The local disposal service is:
