Royal Navy Gig, Trafalgar, gets a makeover at Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard

Storyline: Rowing

Portsmouth’s Royal Navy Gig Rowing Association sent their wooden racing boat to Boathouse 4 in the Historic Dockyard for specialist repair.

Trafalgar suffered during the hot weather in 2022, the heat cracked the wood and made her unusable without repair.

The RNRMC and the Royal Navy Sports Lottery provided generous contributions towards the costs of the repair, allowing the club to send her off to the historic dockyard to be patched up.

Portsmouth Gig Rowing member, Lt Cdr Steve Cass expressed his gratitude saying, “your funding has returned the boat to a racing standard, provided young apprentices with valuable experience, and introduced some junior sailors to the sport of gig rowing.”

The refurbishment was achieved using the skill of the craftsmen and women at Boat House 4 in the Historic Dockyard.

Boathouse 4 specialise in repairing wooden boats, and train future apprentices in what is arguably a niche specialisation.

Trafalgar is now in a far better condition and back on the water being used for training sessions and is ready for racing, much to the delight of club members.
