Royal Navy Boxers and Coaches hone skills with top London clubs

Storyline: Boxing

Boxers and coaches from across the service honed their skills and knowledge last week during a 4-day training camp held in London.

This initiative brought together Royal Navy and amateur boxers from community clubs across South West London, for an opportunity to train and spar.

The Royal Navy boxers were put through their paces during the intensive development week with presentations on human performance, training sessions focusing on conditioning and skills and of course plenty of sparring.

London clubs involved in the event included Wandsworth Amateur Boxing Club (ABC); Earlsfield boxing club and Fitzroy Lodge, led by David Khan, brother to the Mayor of London. Every night offered an opportunity for boxers to train with someone new and improve their skills.

The team were housed in RMR London during the event, allowing them the opportunity for some sightseeing during their Wednesday afternoon make and mend, the highlight being the personal guided tour around the Tower of London.

The Development Team Captain, ET Billie Matthews said: ‘The team day out was nice to break up the week. Everyone has been working really hard the past few months, so it was good to do something as a team outside of the gym.’

The RN squad has had a busy start to the boxing season, with the UK Armed Forces Development box off and the England Boxing Development Championships alongside several club shows. The month will culminate with the first round of the National Association of Boys and Girls Clubs, with three boxers competing over the weekend of the 28 Oct.

The squad is now looking forward to the return of the Elite level boxers and preparation for the RNRM Boxing tour in Fiji and the National Amateur Championships next year.
