HMS Heron’s gymnasium hosted a NAVYfit Festival showcasing various sports the Royal Navy has to offer to Royal Navy personnel on Tues 25 July.

The event consisted of 5 different sports for personnel to participate in.  Personnel could try their hand at badminton, rock climbing, boxing, kayaking and judo. Allowing personnel to have a taster of a sport they potentially have never tried before.

The main organiser for the event Leading Hand Leading Physical Trainer (LPT) Sophie Goodwright said, ‘This afternoon is about promoting Royal Navy sport, what we can offer and recruit more people to join in with the various Navy sports available to them.’

The event was open to all Royal Navy personnel stationed at RNAS Yeovilton.  Personnel got a chance to try their hand at something new with qualified coaches ready to run them through the basics before having a go.

There is potential to go far with sport through the Navy, LPT Goodwright said, ‘If someone shows a real talent for a sport they could be scouted from here by an instructor.  They could go onto play for the Royal Navy or even Great Britain in various championships.  It is an amazing opportunity.’

The NAVYfit Festival was a success.  LPT Goodwright added, ‘It has been a really great day, the turnout has been high and people have got the chance to try some new sports and learn what the Royal Navy can offer.’
