NAVYfit brings grassroots sport to the Britannia Royal Naval College

Storyline: Sport

NAVYfit hosted a grassroots festival at the Britannia Royal Naval College on Wednesday 15th February. The festival was attended by over one hundred and fifty officer cadets who were able to engage in taster sessions for nine different sports.

The festival aimed to engage cadets in sports they may not get the opportunity to try otherwise, varying widely from Rugby Union and Cricket to Brazilian Jujitsu, Nordic Skating and Water Polo.

Participants said, “It was really good to get the chance to try sports that we wouldn’t naturally go out of our way to do.”

Providing an inclusive environment with opportunities in sport for all is a key component of NAVYfit festivals and one that has a proven track record of identifying future athletes to represent the Royal Navy.

Officer cadets who took part in Brazilian Jujitsu said, “it’s definitely something I would give another go and consider joining up to.”

Rear Admiral Jude Terry joined BRNC Commanding Officer, Captain Sarah Oakley at the festival to witness first-hand the positive impact sport has not only on the physical fitness of our cadets but in encouraging support and healthy competition between their peers.

“A fantastic day at Dartmouth BRNC witnessing the grassroots sports provided by the NAVYfit teams. Everything from the traditional to the fastest growing Martial Arts Brazilian Jujitsu. A great way to stay NAVYfit.”

The BRNC NAVYfit festival was the first of 2023 and will be followed by numerous festivals across the country this year.
