A Mandated Manx Adventure

Storyline: Adventurous Training

For the first time, level 2 mandated Adventurous Training (AT) took place on the Isle of Man (IOM), 16-23 Jul 23.

The IOM offers a beautiful dramatic coastline with mountainous interior, perfect for the activities on offer; mountain biking, Stand Up Paddleboarding, mountain trekking and sea kayaking.

Leaving the mainland on a four-hour ferry crossing also adds to the experience of going on an adventure; one that offers exciting opportunities to learn new skills in a new environment, whilst required to demonstrate Royal Navy ethos - sometimes at stretch. Many would argue that is how you build resilient people.

The ferry crossing from Heysham to the capital Douglas in the IOM was through the night followed by a short drive to the South of the island staying in King William’s College near Castle Town. Ideal timing as all the students at the college had recently departed on their summer holidays.

The first day was breakfast on arrival, settling into the comfortable accommodation, unpacking the AT equipment, arranging groups to instructor, resting, followed by a gentile 2-hour coastal walk before dinner.

In the inclusive group of 25 military taking part was a mixture of males and females ranging in age from 17 to 58 representing all professions. The majority were submariners and general service with one Royal Marine and one meteorologist adding further diversity to the gathering.

AB Finley Hart the youngest in the group said, “the AT was challenging but great fun and the IOM was a wonderful place to visit, I would recommend Manx Venture to anyone.”

Lt Cdr Sean Robertson said “thank you to the team for arranging a fantastic week of AT. It was my first time in the IOM I thoroughly enjoyed it.”

If you are interested in taking part next year contact Lt Cdr Joseph Wood (Op Fitness) or Sgt Scott Mills (DRU North) for more details.
