The only way is up for Royal Navy Powerlifters

The annual Royal Navy Powerlifting Championships were held at HMS Drake on Wednesday 29 November.

CPT Andrew Davey organised the event and it was the first to be held under British Powerlifting rules, which proved a great success.

29 service personnel from 11 units competed to win the title of ‘Best Unit Team’ and to qualify for next year’s British Powerlifting events.

CPT Andrew Davey said, “the purpose of the day was to foster team spirit and build on mental and physical resilience within the sport of Powerlifting. It was great to see personnel from all different branches and arms of the wider Royal Navy taking part together.”

Royal Navy personnel of various abilities and weight categories travelled from as far as HMS Calliope to compete with HMNB Devonport taking the Unit Champions crown.

CPT Davey commented, “A special thanks goes to SBD for sponsoring the event and our two guest referees the Commonwealth Powerlifting Chairperson Mr Richard Parker and
GBR lifter Mr Darren Ball.”

The next event on the Royal Navy Powerlifting calendar is the Western Region Powerlifting Championships.
