Submariners get on their bikes for Submariner Memorial Appeal

Twelve Royal Navy Submariners have set off on an epic cycle ride from Land’s End to John O'Groats to raise awareness of the Submariner Memorial Appeal.

The rain stopped for long enough so that the 12 submariners could start their epic 12-day journey. 

The Submariner Memorial Appeal was set up to create a fitting tribute to submariners and their families. The appeal needs £375,000 to fund the creation of an iconic monument at the National Memorial Arboretum. 

Earlier this year it was announced that renowned British sculptor Paul Day will be creating the memorial which will be installed at the National Memorial Arboretum and unveiled at a ceremony attended by HRH Prince William, Commodore-in-Chief Submarines. 

The memorial will be a vital place for personal reflection, repair, and renewal, and somewhere for the submarine community to come together as a family in remembrance. 

Commander Tom Herman, Submarine Flotilla Secretary, said: “This is a truly commendable journey for a memorial which will become the heart of the Submarine Family

“Our memorial is a tribute to the 5600 Submariners who have given their lives for their country, but more than that it is a tribute to the families, spouses, partners, parents and children who are left behind. This team reflects the spirit of those who have gone before them and we, their Submarine family, are proud and grateful.”
