Officer Cadets from Britannia Royal Naval College have taken time out from their normal training programme to use their skills in the local community.
Over the course of two days teams of cadets helped out at East Allington Primary School, a Shrouds of the Somme exhibition in Exeter, St Clements Church and Dartmouth Academy.
At East Allington Primary School the cadets landscaped an uneven slope, clearing the area of the old chicken coup and using shovels to dig in to move the soil and make a level surface.
Further levelling was required for the cadets to construct a polytunnel.
Officer Cadet Christie Jack said: “The cadets had to improvise in places due to some missing parts but despite this small issue the polytunnel was still completed and functioning.
“The head teacher and children from the school looked over the moon with the end product, which gave the cadets a real sense of achievement.”
In Exeter a group of Cadets acted as guides to show members of the public around the Shrouds of the Somme exhibition; a piece of art depicting in excess of 72,000 people killed at the bloodiest battle of the First World War.
Artist Rob Heard has hand-carved 72,000 12 inch figures to represent each one of those killed. The figures have been wrapped and bound in a hand-stitched shroud and were arranged in rows on the ground in Northernhay Gardens in Exeter.
The Cadets also helped collect donationa for the Armed Forces charity, SSAFA.
At St Clements Church in Dartmouth the Cadets cleared an area of debris left by a fallen tree, which had recently been removed.
The Cadets had the difficult task of re-righting gravestones and chopping down dead bits of tree that may have otherwise fallen.
The group sent to Dartmouth Academy completed a range of activities from painting a classroom and shed to carrying out a large-scale gardening project laying paving slabs and a general clean of the area.
