HMS Collingwood hockey team storms to Victory

A team consisting of both experienced and novice players won the Eastern Region Inter-Establishment Indoor Hockey Championships recently.

The squad beat sides from HMS Sultan, HMS Nelson and HMS Queen Elizabeth to win the championship which selects the best players to represent Portsmouth Command in the Regional event to be held at HMS Collingwood on 11th and 12th October.

The calibre of the Collingwood players is impeccable with three of the team having taken part in this year’s World Masters Games which was held in Auckland, New Zealand with an impressive six of the current team having subsequently been selected to represent Portsmouth Command at these upcoming championships.

Petty Officer Underwater Warfare (POUW) Timothy Mallett said, “All the entering teams brought a great mix of youth and experience, it was great to see so many new hockey players out there on the pitch with the old heads.

These grass roots tournaments allow us older players to help develop the next generation of RN hockey players, and I am currently getting great satisfaction from seeing the Collingwood group develop and win at tournaments like this one.”

The Regional Championships will be held in the Sports and Recreation Centre in HMS Collingwood and all staff are welcome to view the action and cheer the players on.

Anyone interested in playing hockey should contact PO Timmy Mallett on Collingwood extension 4044 or Leading Physical Trainer (LPT) Sam Howard in the SARC.
