Base awards celebrate sporting achievement

Military personnel at HM Naval Base Clyde were recently recognised for their outstanding sporting achievements at a glitzy awards dinner.

Guest of honour at the event was three times Olympic gold winning rower Lieutenant Pete Reid, who was on hand to congratulate the nine Service personnel who picked-up awards on the night.

Lead organiser of the award dinner, Petty Officer Physical Trainer (POPT) Lee Foxhall, said, "It was a fantastic night and a great opportunity to recognise some of the remarkable sports men and women at HM Naval Base Clyde and those who have gone that extra mile to ensure sporting opportunities in the Northern Region.

"Sport and Physical Development plays an important role in the Royal Navy, encouraging team work, determination and resilience. Each one of our winners tonight has demonstrated those crucial attributes."

The winners represented a wide variety of sports taking place across the region and included:

Sports Person of the Year - Lance Corporal Fowler of 43 Commando who was recognised for his fantastic achievements in Powerlifting.

Northern Region Team of the Year - The Northern Region Rugby Union team were given the award for a truly amazing turn-around which saw them earn two trophies and a victory against the Army Scotland side.

Outstanding Contribution to Physical Development - Boxer Marine Foreman from 43 Commando was recognised for his achievements representing the Royal Navy and for his selection for the England Amateur Boxing side.

Outstanding Contribution to Physical Development - Petty Officer (PO) Gamble has been a stalwart of the HMS Neptune Field Gun team since 2010. He was recognised for the countless hours of his own time he has invested in the Field Gun crew.

Outstanding Contribution to Physical Development - Hockey aficionado Sub-Lieutenant Kate Pridham was recognised for her outstanding contribution to the sport and for being the driving force behind the resurgence of the Northern Region Hockey side.

Outstanding Contribution to Physical Development - Leading Writer (LWTR) Laura Young was given the award for her dedication in organising and leading regular spinning classes, contributing to the health and fitness of personnel.

Outstanding Contribution to Physical Development - Manager of HMS Queen Elizabeth's football club, Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Stevie Dalton, picked-up an award for motivating the highly skilled squad and for his lead role in organising the Northern Region Soccer Sixes festival.

Outstanding Contribution to Physical Development - Skier Royal Marine Colour Sergeant (CSgt) Simon Willey of 43 Commando was recognised for his success in the field of Telemark which has seen him gain gold medals and RN Colours.

Outstanding Contribution to Physical Development - Member of the winning Royal Navy Telemark skiing team, Lieutenant Shaw, was given his award for his amazing achievements in the Telemark Ski Championships and the GB Indoor Telemark Series.

Outstanding Contribution to Physical Development - Captain Craig Mearns, the Captain of HMS Neptune, was also presented with an award in recognition of his leadership which has been instrumental in the improvement of sport facilities at HM Naval Base Clyde.

To be fully effective in combat, men and women in the Royal Navy and Royal Marines must be physically and mentally fit. They must also possess self-discipline, stamina, courage and a competitive spirit.

Physical Education plays a vital role in developing these qualities which are then enhanced through operational experience and a vibrant programme of Sport, Fitness and Adventurous Training.
