Team from Sultan take on BVUK 100k challenge

A team of Senior Rates from the Defence College of Technical Training’s Royal Naval Air Engineering and Survival Equipment School (RNAESS), HMS Sultan are gearing up to take on a 100k challenge for Blind Veterans UK(BVUK).

Joining with people from across the UK, the group will take on a 100k walk or run from London to Brighton within just 24 hours over Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd July.

The Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm (FAA) has a long standing association with Blind Veterans UK. Traditionally the charity’s members were hosted by the FAA’s Field Gun Crew at HMS Daedalus for a Summer Camp.

When the FAA’s engineering training transferred to HMS Sultan in 1996, the Establishment also kindly agreed to host the Camp.

The association continues to go from strength to strength and the team taking part in the challenge is being led by RNAESS School Warrant Officer, WO1 Steve Hole, who is also the HMS Sultan Service Liaison Officer for BVUK. 

The other team members taking part are Chief Petty Officers Mariesa Dryhurst and Neil Campbell.

Neil said: “We’ve been training hard for the challenge both individually and as a team and are really looking forward to it. Obviously, we’re a little nervous as none of us have done this before but we’ve gone 32 miles in one go which is just over half way and we’ve got each other for encouragement.”

“With the HMS Sultan BVUK Summer Camp, the charity is something very close to everyone within the Establishment. I also have an Aunt who works with them, so we will do everything we can to raise as much money as possible.”
