Royal Navy sailor steps forward to remember Father-in-Law

Petty Officer (SEA) Daniel Tregarthen from The Royal Naval School of Seamanship based at HMS Collingwood recently took part in a charity walk from London to Brighton.

The 100k challenge began early on 27th May in Richmond with Daniel being cheered away from the start line by his wife and children, along with over 2000 other competitors, and soon he was walking along the Thames towards beautiful open countryside.

Undertaking the challenge alone, Daniel found the support of other competitors invaluable during the tough 44-56k mark which he described as the hardest part of the walk. Thankfully, 56k marked the mid-point rest break and, at 9.30pm, a chance for Daniel to enjoy a proper meal before heading off into the darkness to continue the walk.

Sadly, just as Daniel reached the 70k mark at 12.31am, he sustained an injury that forced him out of the event after nearly 11 hours walking, having raised an impressive £1987.65 in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Daniel explained his motivation. “2017 marks the 20th anniversary since my wife lost her father to cancer. Losing her dad at such a young age she has had to grow up without the father figure most of us would have taken for granted.

"This year she will also turn 30 so we thought it fitting to celebrate this, and the life of Roger, with a year of fundraising and charity events.”

Other high-profile events Daniel has planned to raise funds include a sponsored sky-dive in July and undertaking the Great South Run in October. He has already successfully abseiled down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth and completed a swim in the Solent on New Year’s Day.
