Raleigh rowers compete for Bragger's Rights

Trainee sailors at HMS Raleigh have shown their strength and determination on the rowing machine in a bid to win £250 for the establishment’s welfare fund.

A team of 20 took part in the ‘Bragger’s Rights’ rowing competition, one of a number of competitions held each year for ships and establishments. 

Each competitor rowed a total distance of one kilometre with the accumulated time put forward to the adjudicators at HMS Temeraire, the headquarters of Royal Navy physical training, to determine the winners.

Trainee Chef Kier Lammas, aged 22, was selected to row first. He said: “That was really hard, but it was good. I did my one kilometre is about three minutes. 

“I want to box for the Navy and represent Raleigh, so if we do win and the money is spent on more equipment then I’ll probably see some of it.”

The Raleigh team completed the distance in one hour 15 minutes and 49 seconds.

Leading Physical Trainer Mark Wright, the event organiser at HMS Raleigh said: “This is the first time Raleigh has taken part in this competition and we are hoping to do more Fleet competitions within the establishment in due course. 

“The team did really well and hopefully from this there will be a further interest in rowing as a sport and more competition volunteers for future events.”
