Green fingered and enthusiastic personnel from Defence Business Services (DBS), HMS Sultan, have been putting their skills to the test, through a number of environmentally themed challenges as part of the DBS Green Week.
At the beginning of the summer, teams from across DBS took on the challenge of coming up with creative flower displays to fill out and renew concrete flower beds within a budget of just £10 and with Green Week underway it was time for a worthy winners to be picked.
Sultan’s Environment and Energy Manager, Mr Glenn Chatwood (EPA HMS Sultan) had the difficult task of selecting ‘Best in Show’ and ‘Best Small Planter’ from among the many entries which brightened up the outside area at the DBS Centurion Building.
With the larger than life Gnorma the gnome the grand prize for ‘Best in Show’, it was team ‘Fuchsia Dev’ from the Future Development Team who succeeded in securing the gregariously themed office trophy with an ingenious entry which included its own watering scheme.
Afterwards Glenn said: “It was a real privilege for me to be asked to come along and judge all of the different entries.
“You could just see the care and attention to detail that each group had made and picking a winner from among them all was a real challenge.”
Other events around a Green theme throughout the week also included a campaign to encourage people to take the stairs and not the lift, a Volunteering Day at Haslar Shore Leave where a team of DBS personnel helped out in the gardens where Military Personnel and Veterans go for support with PTSD and a combined “wear it green for green day” charity dress down day and a Macmillan Cake Sale with all monies from the dress down day going to Macmillan cancer Support.
DBS’s work in Centurion Building facilitates the Joint Personnel Administration Enquiry Centre (JPAC) and back office teams delivering the Joint Personnel Administration (JPA) function.
Some teams who support DBS’s wider work are also based on site.
DBS operates from eight main sites: Abbey Wood, Gosport, York, Glasgow, Liverpool, Gloucester, Cheadle Hulme and Norcross near Blackpool. DBS has over 2,500 staff and its Chief Executive is based at Abbey Wood.
Jackie Jack, Executive Officer of Centurion Building who had organised activities throughout the week said: “The DBS Green Week has given us all a great opportunity to come together and think about how we can have a positive impact within so many different aspects of our environment.”
