Military runners gather at Culdrose for scenic cross country race

Racers from military bases across the Westcountry descended on to Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose for fourth race in the South West Cross Country League for 2016.

And whereas no one can truly predict the weather at this time of year, over 70 competitors representing Military Units in the South West of England were rewarded with a bright autumnal afternoon, as they negotiated the lanes and fields surrounding Culdrose.

“There are runners from all over the region here today,” said Petty Officer Physical Trainer (POPT) Jamie Marles, who organised the SWCCL race at the base.

“Last year we had about 45 runners, but this year we’ve got around 70. This seems to be a popular course and probably the most scenic cross country route in the series.”

The Culdrose course takes in many of the features that make this part of West Cornwall unique, including the steep hills and muddy gullies that lead down to the near-by ‘Loe Bar’ and Porthleven.

“We’ve seen this event used as a stepping stone to other events in Royal Navy Athletics. In particular, the Inter Services and our Royal Navy Championships, but some just come along for a recreational jog or a just run out from the office in the afternoon.”

Winners of the female and male races this year were; Captain Sophie Morris from 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery and Able Seaman Williams from HMS Raleigh.
