Submarine service launches public information trailer

The Royal Navy’s Submarine Service will aim to shake of its reputation as the silent service by launching a new public information trailer at Barrow in Furness on 11-12 June 2016.

The trailer provides a taste of life on board a submarine through pictures, videos, periscope imagery and the opportunity to talk to serving submariners.

It will make its first appearance in Barrow this weekend when the Submarine Service exercises its freedom of the Borough.

All of the UK’s submarines are built in the Cumbrian town, with some of the first boats being built there in 1902, right through to the Astute class today – arguably the world’s most capable attack submarine.

“This is an opportunity for people to meet with Royal Navy submariners and to find out more about how they contribute to our nation’s security every day – from intelligence gathering to anti-terrorism operations and, of course, providing Continuous at Sea Nuclear Deterrence,” said Commander Darren Mason of the Sustainable Submarine Manning Programme.

The Submarine Service trailer will go on a tour of major public events this summer including the National Armed Forces Day celebration in Cleethorpes, the Bournemouth, Sunderland and Scottish air shows.

The trailer was already owned by the Ministry of Defence and has been repurposed in support of the Submarine Service. Its refurbishment cost £15,000. The unit is 7.5m by 8.0m when set up, weighs 3.4 tons and can hold 25 people at a time.
