Sailors stumped by Gosport talent

On the 20th July a team of sailors from HMS Collingwood travelled to Gosport Borough Cricket Team’s home ground, Privett Park, to compete in a friendly cricket match.

Personnel from HMS Collingwood met with the Gosport team for an evening of sunshine, refreshments and some lively community competition.

With Collingwood bowling and fielding first, the match started on an extremely relaxed note, taking advantage of the summer sunshine.

Each batsman initially received the first ball for free and as the competition proceeded both teams made a confident attempt for the win. 

One member of HMS Collingwood’s team, Leading Physical Trainer Will Ballanger, commented on the event “It’s a great event with the aim of interacting with the local sporting community and also showcasing some of the talent we have within Royal Navy Cricket.

“Special thanks go out to Lieutenant Richard Hay for arranging the event, Mr Keith Woodland for snapping the action and the remaining players who had given up their summer’s evening for a spot of friendly competition.”

Collingwood’s Phase 2 trainees, Able Seaman George Boulton and Able Seaman Jack Watson proved to be stars of the establishment’s team, with their bowling talents consecutively dismissing the Gosport batsmen.

However the sailor’s talents were unfortunately not enough, with the roles reversed Gosport stepped in to return the favour and flawlessly bowled to victory.

With Gosport winning by 57 runs, the feelings of defeat soon faded as the teams enjoyed a well-deserved home cooked meal together and a thank you to the local club for hosting the event.
