HMS Sultan engineers celebrate branch anniversary

Air and Marine Engineers at HMS Sultan joined in celebrations to mark the 184th birthday of the Engineering Branch of the Royal Navy.

The establishment’s commanding officer, Captain John Voyce, joined staff and trainees for a spot of birthday cake surrounding by some of the kit personnel at the Gosport establishment learn to maintain.

Since its first commission in 1956 as a Mechanical Training and Repair establishment, HMS Sultan has made a significant contribution towards the ongoing success of the branch.

Today the base is home to Defence College of Technical Training’s Defence School of Marine Engineering and the Royal Naval Air Engineering and Survival Equipment School.

“I am delighted to mark the 184th birthday of the Royal Navy’s Engineering Branch today at HMS Sultan,” said Captain Voyce.

“The day offers us a great opportunity to recognise our heritage and celebrate the critical role that our engineers play in designing, building, generating, operating, maintaining, diagnosing and repairing our aircraft, ships, submarines and vehicles around the world. 

“Alongside our Weapons Engineering colleagues at HMS Collingwood, we continue to draw inspiration from our historic past and aspire to achieve greater heights in our modern future as we train the next generation of Officer and Rating engineers.”
