RFA Mounts Bay Engages With Sea Cadet Corps in Bermuda

RFA Mounts Bay hosted the Bermudan Sea Cadet Corps (SCC) during a recent wider regional engagement visit to Hamilton, Bermuda.

Lt Cdr (SCC) Michael Frith, his staff and a group of 17 Sea Cadets were given a short presentation about RFA Mounts Bay Hurricane Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) tasking during the 2017 hurricane season, when three Category 5 hurricanes caused widespread damage to the Caribbean.

The cadets were then given a tour of the vessel by RFA Officer Cadet Madelaine Harveynevin, followed by light refreshments provided by the galley staff. 

By chance RFA Mounts Bay Navigating Officer, First Officer Jonathan Church, was reunited with an old friend from his 2004 Warsash College cadet training intake, SCC Training Officer Anthoni Lightbourne, who is employed as a Hamilton Harbour Pilot. When RFA Mounts Bay’s visit to Bermuda came to an end the pair of them ensured the vessel proceeded safely to sea.

He commented, “It was a completely unexpected meeting, Toni and I are good friends from our Warsash College days together.

"But, due to the nature of our different careers, it has made meeting up afterwards very difficult.

"When we departed Bermuda I found it a bit surreal navigating the ship with his advice. But from time to time a career at sea affords us the opportunity to meet old friends in unexpected places."
