The current Second Sea lord is Martin Connell who was appointed Second Sea Lord in January 2022. He is responsible for delivery of the RN’s future capabilities, strategy and long-term programme and is the RN’s Principal Personnel Officer.
The Second Sea Lord is responsible for overseeing all 'people matters' in the Royal Navy - recruiting, training, sport, diversity, welfare and support for families - as well as bases and facilities.
The Second Sea Lord reports to the First Sea Lord and is appointed by the Prime Minister.
