    A force far beneath

Moving in near silence with an unlimited range. Operating hundreds of metres beneath the ocean in total darkness. A crew who have each had the highest level of training. The submarine service is as elusive as it is essential.

With the advanced new Dreadnought submarine set to replace Vanguard from 2030, our submarines don’t just intimidate the enemy. They provide a continuous nuclear deterrent today and long into the future.

    Protecting infrastructure

Cables carrying data and energy run beneath our sea beds. Our way of life depends on them, making them a target for our enemies.

But long before a threat can do any damage, a submarine is already hunting it.

Our subs are also active in key shipping lanes vital to bringing goods to our shores.

Nobody sees it happen. That's how you know it's working.

    Creating highly-skilled jobs

The new Dreadnought class submarines have received a major £8.4 billion investment as they enter the next stage of building.

Based in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, the build programme will generate 47,000 jobs and thousands of skilled apprenticeships both locally and across the UK.

Our UK nuclear deterrent is the ultimate guarantee of our security. As the threats we face increase, it's importance is greater than ever.
