HMS Cardiff

HMS Cardiff is the second City Class Type 26 frigate, a fast, adaptable, future-proofed ship. She will enter service in the late-2020s.

HMS Cardiff

Role

Fast and adaptable with exceptional range, HMS Cardiff is an advanced anti-submarine warfare vessel, designed to provide essential protection to our nuclear deterrent and aircraft carriers.

HMS Cardiff is the fourth ship to bear this name after the Welsh capital city. She was built by BAE Systems in Govan shipyard on the river Clyde and was floated off in August 2024. After Float off the ship was fitted out with its equipment in the Scotstoun shipyard and will conduct sea trials prior to delivery to the fleet in 2028.

Capability

HMS Cardiff is fitted with a world class low frequency active and passive towed array sonar, used to detect, classify and track submarines before they detect her.
The Type 26’s missile silos provide a wide choice of weapons to counter any threat.

The flight deck will be able to accommodate helicopters up to the size of the RAF’s Chinooks, while her loading bay can quickly adapt to house and deploy vessels, vehicles and containers.

The result? A frigate empowered to adapt to changing missions, from disaster relief and humanitarian aid operations to embarking military forces or supporting diving operations.

Crew

Once fully operational, the eventual complement of the HMS Cardiff will be 161 Royal Navy personnel, which is divided into four main departments - Warfare, Weapons Engineering, Marine Engineering, and Logistics.
