Safety Guidelines

All water users must comply with the Regulations contained in the Dockyard Port of Plymouth Order 2020 and the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (Rules of Road). Many incidents and near misses are a result of excessive speed or failing to keep a good lookout.

There are a variety of speed limits throughout the port to ensure the safety of all water users.

10 Knots - All vessels within 400 metres of the shore and north of Plymouth Breakwater

8 Knots - All vessels within the Cattewater

4 knots - All vessels within Sutton Channel and designated bathing or diving areas

Vessels under 15m in length overall may exceed the speed limit in Plymouth Sound (outside of 400m from the shore) and in the designated high speed areas.
