Port information

KHM Clyde is the Harbour Authority for the Clyde Dockyard Port with powers conferred from The Clyde Dockyard Port of Gareloch and Loch Long Order (2011), the Faslane, Coulport and Rhu Narrows Byelaws (1986) and the Rhu Narrows Byelaws (1992).

What we do

KHM Clyde is accountable to the Secretary of State for Defence through the Director Submarines (Dir SM) and the Naval Base Commander (Clyde) with jurisdiction over the Clyde Dockyard Port of Gareloch and Loch Long.

The Authority has legal and operational responsibility for the movement of shipping within these areas. KHM can issue General Directions to any vessel within the jurisdiction for the purpose of Navigational Safety. This power is also delegated to specifically authorised deputies and assistants (including Harbour Controllers).

These General Directions are to be construed in conjunction with the Clyde Dockyard Port of Gareloch and Loch Long Order 2011, Pilotage Directions and Clyde Warning Notices (Local Notices to Mariners).

Restricted areas

The chartlet shows the approximate positions of the restricted areas. Accurate positions are on the relevant admiralty charts. The speed limits are shown also. The blue lines show the southerly limit of the Clyde Dockyard Port of Gareloch and Loch Long. Essentially all the water north of this line within the loch is under the jurisdiction of the King's Harbour Master.

Regardless of port closures or other activity, it is recommended that all vessels call KHM Clyde on VHF Ch 73 when approaching the Dockyard Port to inform the Harbour Controller of their intentions. This will allow the vessel to be fully informed of activity in the area. All vessels in the area will be tracked by the Harbour radar and monitored by the MOD police vessels, which form part of the security provision for the Harbour.
