HMS Westminster crew have adventurous time at Clyde

Crew members from visiting warship, HMS Westminster, recently praised the service and facilities they enjoyed at HMS Neptune’s Adventurous Training (AT) facility at HMNB Clyde.

Sixteen members of the ship’s company disembarked at Glenmallen on Monday, 27 November, and set off for Faslane to start three days of Adventurous Training.

The party, hosted by Chief Petty Officer Rice, was split into three groups and over the next three days each group took turns dry slope skiing, mountain biking and hill walking.

Following the few days of formal training, most of the group met on the Thursday morning at the HMS Neptune Sportsdrome to make use of the excellent facilities on offer at the Naval Base and to enjoy a game of dodgeball and a few other team sports.

The remainder of the group used this as a perfect opportunity for some self-organised AT, and planned their own mountain biking expedition, which lasted throughout the weekend.

The feedback from each group was very positive with mountain biking day being popular with everyone who took part.

Members of the group felt they were able to enhance their skills in each activity with the standard of instruction being high throughout the week.

Sub Lieutenant Doug Wilkie who took part in the Adventurous Training said: “As customers of the AT package we all thoroughly enjoyed the week.

Thank you to the team. The AT centre provided good kit throughout the week, which was appreciated by all in the group and having such resourceful and helpful staff made our lives very easy.

“I can’t praise the facility and staff enough and hope that other visiting ships take advantage of the training on offer. I believe all ships could benefit from the package we received.”
