Reaching your potential

The Royal Navy isn’t operationally effective because of state-of-the-art weapons systems and warships. It’s our people who protect our nation’s interests, all over the world, 365 days a year. It’s why we invest continuously in the team of over 30,000 men and women who have chosen careers in the Naval Service, helping them reach – and redefine – their potential.

Opportunities for career progression

Whether you’re a university graduate or school leaver, the Royal Navy gives you the opportunity to shape the career you want – or the one you don’t even know you can have. How far you go is up to you.

World-class training, paid for by us, means you can achieve all the qualifications you want. It could be anything from NVQs to Masters Degrees and Engineering Charterships, or the internationally recognised qualifications specific to the role you choose.

But the Royal Navy doesn’t just give you qualifications that put you a cut above the rest in the civilian sector. With hard work and dedication, you can start working your way through the ranks from the get-go, gaining the unique experience and skills that come with the structure of a Naval Service career. Again, how far you go is up to you, but rest assured, you’ll be highly sought after if you decide to return to civilian life.

Using the Enhanced Learning Credits that I build up each year, I am going to top up my foundation degree to a BSc in Engineering and Management. And because it’s part of Portsmouth University’s Learning at Work programme, I can complete it during my next deployment.

Chris, 28
Warfare Officer

I didn’t go to university, so I joined at 19. As soon as I passed out of Britannia Royal Naval College, I assumed the rank of Midshipman. Since then, I have become a navigation specialist, and have taken Command of my own ship.

Lex, 18

I left school with one GCSE. Since I joined, I’ve completed NVQs and received plenty of training and support. My biggest achievement is having gained leadership qualifications, which are highly transferable.
