A Writer from Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose is laughing all the way to the bank, with a staggering £1000 raised at a special charity Comedy night.
Leading Writer Pete Armstrong of 814 Naval Air Squadron planned the event to bring a bit of winter cheer to the Air Station late last year.
Because of his efforts he has now decided to split the amount collected between the Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity (RN&RMC) and the Seahawk Theatre Club, who plan to spend the money on new lights for the stage.
“The amount we raised has gone well beyond what I expected from the outset,” said Pete.
“In all we raised more than a thousand pounds, which we are dividing £500 to the RN&RMC and the rest to the Theatre club.”
Pete had contacted the British Armed Forces Foundation, who regularly travel and put together entertainment shows for deployed Units on operations in Afghanistan or anywhere where the British Military serve.
“They were pretty keen to come down to Cornwall when I called them up, and we even got some sponsorship from `Rebel Brewery’ a local brewer, included a few barrels for us to sell.
"Everyone really enjoyed the night and got behind us.”
Even the comedians were impressed and one commented that it was, “a great venue and really nice to put on a show for the guys and their families back in the UK.”
The success of the event has got the sailors at Culdrose wanting more and Pete is now being asked to organise another comedy night this year.
“People have really got an appetite now and I’m constantly being asked to get them down again for an even bigger night with even bigger comedians.”
