Are URNU cadets getting younger and younger these days?
Don’t worry, these are actually Sea Cadets, Scarborough’s to be precise, from TS Scarborough, who were given a chance to look around the patrol boat during a visit to the North Yorkshire resort.
The crew of HMS Example plus students from Northumbria Universities Royal Naval Unit took their boat to sea for a weekend – the first ‘deployment’ since the P2000 completed a refit.
The trip to Scarborough saw ten students and their training officer embark for navigation and seamanship training, alongside HMS Explorer, which is based down the east coast in Hull.
The journey was also an opportunity for the students to learn about ship-handling, rope work and about how the Royal Navy operates generally.
Beautiful weather held up for the weekend, and after a quick stop at anchor for lunch in picturesque Runswick Bay, the two ships headed to Scarborough, and completed some training manoeuvres, including a man overboard exercise, to help with the safe running of the ship.
On Sunday morning Example and her crew invited the Sea Cadets aboard for a tour of the ship.
“They had a fantastic time and asked some really challenging questions, putting the URNU student who hosted them through her paces,” said Lt Thomas Stapley-Bunten, Example’s Commanding Officer.
“One outstanding cadet even had the opportunity to pipe the side for me as I came aboard for the day.
“The weekend was a great success and all the students and the crew are looking forward to many more sea weekends in the new year.”
