Cup final for BRNC’S football team

A hat-trick of goals has given the Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC) football team a place in the final of the Devon Wednesday League George Lang Cup.

The team beat City Police by three goals to one on home soil to earn their place and are now waiting to find out who the opposition will be for the final on Wednesday 11 May in Newton Abbot.

University of Plymouth IV will take to the field against Devonport High School (A) on Wednesday 27 April to decide who will face the College.

Lieutenant Darren Roach, the BRNC team manager said:  “The team is very excited about playing in the final and there is a real buzz around the College and the Football Club.

“We’ve had a great season so far.  Most of our team is made up of Officer Cadets undergoing initial naval training so this is a great opportunity for them to bring some silverware back to the College and leave their mark at BRNC.

“Our players to watch include Joe Souch, an Officer Cadet, who is set to complete his training this week.

“He is a winger who has scored plenty of goals this season and set up his fair share too.

“Along with Joe, we have Lieutenant David ‘Nobby’ Clark , who is the most senior player in the side and remains one of BRNC’s most important players in the heart of the midfield.”

The team were established for the 2015/16 season and are also riding high in the Devon Wednesday League currently occupying fourth position in the Premier League, one point behind HMS Raleigh with two games in hand of their rival Royal Navy training establishment.

Lieutenant Roach said:  “Having been absent as a regular sport at BRNC for some years, we set about establishing a Football Club with the purpose of providing competitive fixtures for the Officer Cadets, as well as regular training during Monday evening and Wednesday afternoon sport.

“We entered the team into the Devon Wednesday Premier League and have enjoyed a successful season, losing only three games and now qualifying for the final of the George Lang Devon FA Cup.

“The team will fly out to Gibraltar during the College Easter leave period for a week of coaching and fixtures, which includes a match against the Gibraltar National Youth Team- a fantastic opportunity for the team and all involved.”
