Replacing the Lynx Mk8, the Wildcat has a more powerful engine allowing it to be flown in extreme conditions all year round. It is also equipped with a more robust fuselage, a high tech interactive display and a new radar system that provides 360-degree surveillance. The Wildcat Maritime Attack Helicopter can carry Sting Ray torpedoes, a door-mounted 0.5" heavy machine gun, and new light and heavy variants of the Future Anti-Surface Guided Weapon Missiles.
Expected to perform a range of tasks, the Wildcat HMA Mk2 will be used in anti-surface warfare, force protection and counter-piracy. It will also be able to carry out an anti-submarine role. As a ship-borne helicopter, Wildcat will provide commanders with a flexible attack capability which can be deployed to tackle a range of threats at sea and from the sea. With state of the art sensors, equipment and weapons, it will be an outstanding asset that will maintain Royal Naval units at the cutting edge of worldwide maritime operations.
The new maritime Wildcat attack helicopter is an excellent addition to the Royal Navy’s arsenal, providing it with greater firepower and a range of technological enhancements.
What I like best is the variety. On any given mission I could be monitoring threats, searching for targets, or even using weapons. I also get to be involved in planning and executing major operations – nothing beats the feeling of seeing it all come together successfully.
Whether we’re on ship or at the shore base, there’s always time to wind down. I might head to the mess for a drink or catch up on some sleep.
I’m a trained first-aider – it’s part of my role – so I’m out on call to help out if anyone gets into trouble and needs a hand.
I work on the Wildcat, operating from a Type 45 Destroyer. That means surveillance, so I’m feeding vital info back to the ship’s ops room.
A big part of my job is pre-flight planning, so I work with the Pilot and Commanding Officers to fine-tune the mission.
The Wildcat is a master of all trades, so we use it for search and rescue missions, like the recent refugee operations in the Med.
Training’s happening all the time, so I’m constantly honing my skills – whether in the classroom or in the air.
