HMS Vivid has been the Plymouth Royal Naval Reserve unit since 1959. Our reservists benefit immensely from belonging to a unit which is based within the largest Naval Base in Western Europe, HM Naval Base Devonport. 

This provides excellent training opportunities, giving them the chance to see the Royal Navy at work.

Unit History

The name HMS Vivid1848

Over the last 150 years, nine Naval Ships and establishments have carried the name HMS Vivid. The first a wooden paddle packet, launched in 1848. The last was a submarine active during WWII.


The Reserve Unit HMS Vivid has been located in several locations around Plymouth, but most recently relocated from Mount Wise to its current location in Devonport Naval Base in 2004.

Association with Plymouth2009

HMS Vivid’s long association with Plymouth was formally recognised in March 2009 when it was awarded the Freedom of the City of Plymouth,the same year, HMS Vivid celebrated 50 years.

The unit is situated in the South Yard of Devonport Naval Base, Plymouth. Directions From Plymouth city centre head towards Devonport. Turn left at the traffic lights opposite the Salvation Army House and enter the Dockyard via Granby or Spinnaker Gate.
