HMS Forward is a Reservist Unit based in the heart of Birmingham. With over 100 members of the Ship’s Company, HMS Forward is the central hub for all Royal Naval Reserve activity in the West Midlands.
HMS Forward is a modern, purpose-built training establishment. The unit shares its location with various military units, including the Birmingham University Royal Navy Unit.
Close to the Birmingham City Football Ground, HMS Forward is just a short distance from Birmingham City Inner Ring Road, easily accessible by local bus services and from the nearest railway station at Adderley Park.
The RNR has always had strong links with Birmingham. A Naval Communications Training Centre was established in the city by the end of World War II. In 1986, it was commissioned as HMS Forward.
The unit moved to its present location in April 1999 when it was officially opened by HRH The Princess Royal.
The long association between the Royal Naval Reserve and the City of Birmingham was formally recognised in 2004 when HMS Forward received the Freedom of the City.
