The unit provides naval training to undergraduates in the Yorkshire area, covering the following universities: University of Leeds, Leeds Bradford University, University of Hull, University of Bradford, University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University and the University of York.

Midshipman Charlie Holness, URNU Yorkshire

"Joining Yorkshire URNU in my first year at university has been the best decision I have made during my 3 years in Leeds. Yorkshire URNU has given me loads of fantastic opportunities: I have sailed all around the British Isles, I have made friends for life, I have become a confident leader and I have had access to many diverse opportunities. Meet the URNU team

Commanding Officer

Lt RN Christie Jack  

  • Joined the Royal Navy in 2017 after graduating with a BA Joint Honours in Politics and International Relations 

  • Spent 5 months with the Brazilian Navy travelling the world as part of her training 

  • Qualified as an Officer of the Watch in March 2019, Bridge Warfare Qualified in November 2019 

  • First complement assignment was Officer of the Watch 4 in HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH: deploying for OP FORTIS 

  • Assumed command of URNU YORKSHIRE in Jan 23 

Coxswain

WO1 J R Kirby RM

  • Joined the RM in 1992
  • PTI Training in 1999
  • Advanced through the ranks to WO1 over an interesting career with operations in Northern Ireland, onboard HMS BEAVER during the Bosnia conflict, Iraq and Afghanistan
  • Joined URNU Yorkshire in April 2022
 

Senior Training Officer

Lt Wendy Goode RNR

  • Joined BRNC in 1999 after 3 years in URNU Southampton/HMS BLAZER
  • YO Fleet training in HMS BRAVE and HMS CHATHAM, including Sierra Leone in 2000
  • Signal Communications Officer and Navigating Officer in HMS PENZANCE and HMS SOUTHAMPTON
  • Left the RN in 2005 and joined URNU Yorkshire as a Training Officer until 2008
  • Re-joined URNU Yorkshire in 2021
 

Unit Admin Officer

Mr Gavin Sutton

  • Joined URNU Northumbrian in February 2016
  • Responsible for the administration of URNU’s Northumbrian, Yorkshire, Manchester & Salford and East Midlands
  • Previously worked in the British Army’s Royal Corps of Signals, Civil Service, and North East Ambulance Service
