URNU Wales welcomes students from universities across South Wales who want to learn more about the Royal Navy whilst experiencing challenging activities, training at sea and learning and developing leadership skills. Activities include sports and adventurous training, going to sea on RN ships and social events.  We are based in HMS CAMBRIA in Cardiff Bay and our weekly training nights take place on Thursday evenings during term time.

Meet the URNU team

Commanding Officer

Lt Callum Toft

  • Joined the Royal Navy in May 2010 as an Engineering Technician Weapon Engineer
  • Served on HMS ILLUSTRIOUS 2011 to 2014 conducting multiple operational deployments including OP PATWIN
  • Commissioned as an Upper Yardman in 2018 and transferred to become a Weapon Engineer Officer Submariner
  • Completed deterrent patrols as an AWEO and TWEO on HMS VENGEANCE and HMS VIGILANT
  • Assumed Command of URNU Wales in February 23

Coxswain

CSgt Edward Wells RM

  • Joined Royal Marines in 2003
  • Heavy Weapons specialist
  • Multiple operational deployments in a wide variety of environments
  • Served as both a regular and reservist
  • Civilian career included anti-piracy security work around the Horn of Africa
  • Joined URNU Wales in October 2022
 

Senior Training Officer

Lt Nick Winder RNR

  • Joined URNU Liverpool as an Officer Cadet 1993-97 becoming the first Senior Midshipman
  • Graduated with a B.Ed.Hons
  • Joined URNU Wales as a Training Officer in 1999
  • Over two years’ experience in HMS EXPRESS and deployed in HMS MONMOUTH
  • Qualified RYA Yachtmaster, Shorebased Instructor and Cruising Instructor
  • Qualified outdoor instructor in multiple disciplines and now working as an outdoor education tutor in the Brecon Beacons
 

 

Unit Admin Officer

Mrs Victoria Henniker-Heaton

  • Joined Bristol & Wales URNU in February 2020
  • Responsible for the administration of the Unit
  • Previously worked in Hotel Management & Conference Offices in London and Bristol
