Based in the stunning location of HMS Calliope on the Gateshead Quayside, URNU Northumbrian aims to provide world-class maritime and leadership training, whilst allowing you to become part of a team of like-minded individuals at University. You will have the opportunity to learn about the Royal Navy, Navigation and Seamanship and work towards a CMI Level 5 qualification in Leadership and Management. URNUN recruits from Northumbria, Newcastle, Durham and Sunderland Universities.

Meet the URNU team

Commanding Officer

Lt Flo Maddock-Greene RN

  • Joined the Royal Navy in June 2013 in the Catering Services Branch
  • Commissioned in August 2019 as a Logistics Officer
  • Served in HM Ships, Ocean, Somerset, Bulwark, Northumberland, Dauntless and Albion
  • Assumed Command of URNU Northumbrian in September 2021

 

 

Coxswain

CPO (CS) Darren “George” Cross 

  • Joined the Royal Navy 1990 as Junior Assistant Cook 2nd Class (JACK2)
  • Deployed globally on LPD’s, Type 42 Destroyers, Aircraft Carriers, Single Role & Hunt Class Mine Sweepers supporting various UK & NATO operations and conflicts
  • Assumed the Role of URNU Northumbrian Coxswain 2022 having previously been URNU Edinburgh’s Coxswain
 

    Senior Training Officer

    Lt. Anthony Lanaghan RNR

    • Former member of NURNU
    • Served all over the world navigating Oil and Gas tankers
    • Now works closer to home as a Chief Mate on Tugs

    Unit Admin Officer

    Mr Gavin Sutton

    • Joined URNU Northumbrian in February 2016.
    • Responsible for the administration of URNU’s Northumbrian, Yorkshire, Manchester & Salford and East Midlands.
    • Previously worked in the British Army’s Royal Corps of Signals, Civil Service, and North East Ambulance Service.
