East Scotland & Tay Division

URNU East Scotland trains a range of undergraduates from universities across the Edinburgh and Tayside region. Develop your leadership skills by taking part in training at sea, adventurous training, sports and social events.

With a strong team ethos, students leave the URNU equipped with the skills and confidence to follow whatever path they choose to follow.

Our regular training takes place on Tuesday evenings during term time, and we are situated in the heart of Edinburgh with our satellite Tay Division unit in Dundee serving the universities of Abertay, Dundee and St Andrews.

Meet the URNU team

Commanding Officer

Lt Cdr Nicholas Bates RN

  • Joined the RN in September 1998 as Aircrew and qualified on Sea King Anti-Submarine Warfare in 2001
  • Multiple deployments on different ship classes before progressing to Instructor
  • Merlin Flight Commander and Senior Observer
  • Staff jobs including MA to Fleet Commander
  • First Ops Officer of HMS PRINCE OF WALES taking the ship from build to sea trials to commissioning
  • Completed role as SASO, responsible for assessing and assuring all aviation-capable ships in the Fleet
  • Joined URNU East Scotland in September 2022
 

Coxswain

CPO Steven “Squash” Court

  • Joined RN in May 1992 as a Writer
  • Conducted deployments around the world including West Indies, Gulf, Falklands, Mediterranean and disaster relief during hurricanes HANNA and IKE
  • Op Tours in Afghanistan, Iraq and Bosnia
  • Left RN in 2014
  • Worked for Babcock as an HR Advisor
  • Re-joined RN in 2020 on FTRS as Workforce Manager in Faslane
  • Joined URNU East Scotland in 2022

  • OiC Tay Division
  • Joined URNU East Scotland in 2003
  • Currently a teacher in Aberdeenshire
 

Unit Admin Officer

Mrs Karen Rennie

  

  • Joined URNU Edinburgh in August 2021

  • Responsible for the administration of Scottish Regionincluding Edinburgh, Dundee, and Glasgow

  • Previously worked in Defence Industry, Civil Service,Charity Marketing and Fife Collage and Social Housing

  • Enjoys volunteering at local cancer charity shop
