University Royal Naval Unit (URNU) Bristol was formed in 1986 and was then affiliated directly with HMS Dasher (P280) a P2000 patrol vessel. URNU Bristol now operates from HMS Flying Fox, a shore-based establishment in Bristol, with approximately 50 student Officer Cadets coming from the Universities of Bristol, West of England and Bath.

Meet the URNU team

Commanding Officer

Lt Steph Sheppard RN

  • Royal Navy commissioned in 2013
  • Warfare Officer and qualified Navigator
  • Majority of career deployed on T23 Frigates in the UK and the Gulf as a Bridge Watchkeeper
  • Navigating Officer of HMS FORTH – the first ship in the new Offshore Patrol Vessel Class. Deployed to the Falklands and South Atlantic
  • Employed as a Navigation Instructor prior to joining the URNU as CO
 

Coxswain

CPO Troye Funnel

  • Joined the Royal Navy in 1988
  • Anti-Submarine Warfare Specialist
  • Trained as a Chief Instructor and Divisional Officer in Damage Repair Instructional Unit and FOSTs ASW unit

Senior Training Officer

Lt. Chris Cameron RNR

  • Completed 25 years at Bristol URNU (15 years as Senior Training Officer)
  • Served 6 years with the Gordon Highlanders as an infantry soldier
  • After spending 17 years teaching science, he began a new post as electronics lecturer for the Defence College of Technical Training.

Unit Admin Officer

Mrs Victoria Henniker-Heaton

  • Joined Bristol & Wales URNU in February 2020
  • Responsible for the administration of the Unit
  • Previously worked in Hotel Management & Conference Offices in London and Bristol
