HMS Lancaster (F229)

HMS Lancaster is a Type 23 frigate of the Duke Class and was built on the Clyde, joining the Fleet in 1992.

Role

Led by Commander Sam Stephens, HMS Lancaster is a multi-role warship, which is equally adept at tackling drug-busting operations in the Caribbean as it is carrying out maritime security patrols East of Suez. The Royal Navy’s Type 23 frigates are the core of our frontline fleet simply because of their utility and all-round operational effectiveness.

HMS Lancaster is capable of deploying with a Wildcat maritime attack helicopter, which makes her ideal for our most challenging defence engagement and security operations.

1694

The First Lancaster

HMS Lancaster was first built in the 17th Century, serving for almost 80 years and notably taking part in the siege of Louisburg, Canada. She was rebuilt several times before finally being broken up in 1773.

1797

The Second Lancaster

The second Lancaster was originally a merchant ship before being requisitioned by the Navy during the French Revolutionary War. She took part in the decisive victory at Camperdown in 1797.

1823

The Third Lancaster

The third Lancaster never saw combat despite a 40-year career during the era of Pax Britannica.

1902

The Fourth Lancaster

The fourth Lancaster was a Monmouth-class armoured cruiser built at the turn of the 20th Century. This steam-powered vessel served throughout World War I.

1940

The Fifth Lancaster

Formerly USS Philip, the fifth Lancaster was used as a minelayer escort in the UK-Iceland-Faeroes gap, interspersed with Atlantic and North Russian convoy duties.
