1710 Naval Air Squadron

1710 Naval Air Squadron delivers scientific and engineering support to UK Armed forces aircraft worldwide.

Role

With no aircraft of its own, 1710 Naval Air Squadron (NAS) delivers scientific and engineering support to military aviation. The Squadron is complimented by a mixture of Tri-Service uniformed personnel and field-leading scientists, who have the combined experience, knowledge, and expertise required to keep airframes flying and enhance aircraft capability.
Members of the Squadron deploy across the world – including in Royal Navy ships – to support military aviation. 1710 NAS has the specialist skills and facilities to repair and modify aircraft as well as provide scientific advice and engineering monitoring.

Unit history

1946

The Naval Aircraft Materials Laboratory is opened

The Naval Aircraft Materials Laboratory was opened in 1946 as the Materials Laboratory at the Royal Naval Aircraft Repair Yard, Fleetlands. It dealt with all metallurgical and chemical problems affecting work in the yard.

1956

Mobile Aircraft Repair and Transportation Support Unit is formed

As part of a major reorganisation of Fleet Air Arm support units between 1954-1956, several smaller repair air transportation units were combined to form the Mobile Aircraft Repair, Transportation and Salvage Unit (MARTSU).

1989

Mobile Aircraft Support Unit is formed

The Fleet Air Arm’s Modification and Repair capabilities are brought together when MARTSU and the Naval Aircraft Trials and Installation Unit combine with some smaller units to form the Mobile Aircraft Support Unit (MASU).

2010

1710 NAS is commissioned

1710 NAS was commissioned on 27 May 2010 bringing together the capabilities of several different organisations including the Materials Integrity Group, Mobile Aircraft Support Unit and Naval Aircraft Materials Laboratory.
