Role
Led by Commander Kurt Courtney, HMS Hibernia is the only RNR unit in Northern Ireland and, as such, the Reservists there represent a cross section of the Northern Ireland population. Although many of the ship’s company come from the Greater Belfast area, the catchment area encompasses the whole of the Island of Ireland.
The Royal Naval Reserve has been in existence in Northern Ireland since 1924. Originally based in HMS Caroline in Belfast, since 2009 it has been based in HMS Hibernia at Lisburn.
