HMS Flying Fox (Bristol)

HMS Flying Fox is the Royal Naval Reserve Unit associated with Bristol.

Role

Led by Commander Richard Bateman, HMS Flying Fox has enjoyed a long association with the historic port of Bristol. This was formally recognised when HMS Flying Fox was awarded the Freedom of the City of Bristol in 2002.

Today, the unit shares its facilities with the Naval Regional Headquarters for Bristol and the West of England. Interested parties can attend an admin night is the first Tuesday of each month, from 19:30-21:30.

1903

Presence in Bristol

There has been a Royal Naval Reserve presence in Bristol since 1903.

1924

Reformed

After World War 1, the division was reformed and a new drill ship, a Fleet Sweeping Vessel (Sloop) called HMS Flying Fox was berthed at Bristol in 1924.

1972

Renamed

Renamed Severn Division following World War II, HMS Flying Fox moved ashore to its present building in 1972.
