HMS Severn (P282)

HMS Severn is a River Class offshore patrol vessel built by Vosper Thornycroft at their Woolston yard in 2002. Along with her sister ships, Tyne and Mersey, she is one of three Offshore Patrol Vessels ploughing the seas around the UK almost every day.

Role

Commanded by Commander Brian Drewett, HMS Severn joins her sisters HMS Mersey and Tyne with the capabilities and training to escort passing foreign warships, mount fishing vessel inspections and defend the UK border.

She also performs a unique role providing training for Royal Navy navigators, who join the ship for testing pilotage off the west coast of Scotland and English Channel.

1786

The Forth HMS Severn

The fourth HMS Severn was a 44-gun Adventure-class fifth rate. Launched in 1786 she was wrecked in 1804.
1813

The Fifth HMS Severn

The fifth was a powerful 40-gun ‘Endymion‘ Class frigate. She was involved in the War of 1812 against the US, including the capture of Washington DC, the burning of the White House and the bombardment of Fort McHenry.

Algiers 1816 She took part in the Bombardment of Algiers in 1816, leading to the promise by the Dey of Algiers to abolish the enslavement of Christians in perpetuity, and to free all slaves in Algiers.

The Sixth HMS Severn

The next HMS Severn was one of the last frigates to be built as a sailing warship, eventually broken up in 1876 after only one active commission to the East Indies.

The Seventh HMS Severn

The seventh ship represented a great technological leap forward. She was a ‘Mersey’ Class protected cruiser, the first cruisers to be built with no sailing rig, as solely steam-powered ships.

The Ninth HMS Severn

The ninth vessel to be named Severn was a Thames-class fleet submarine. She was sent to the South Atlantic when war broke out. In the Mediterranean she conducted anti-shipping patrols, 'cloak and dagger' missions on enemy coasts and ran supplies to the besieged garrison of the Aegean island of Leros. Spending the last years of the war in the Indian Ocean, she was scrapped in 1946 in Bombay.
