Delta Squadron

Delta Squadron consists of two highly skilled diving units, comprising clearance divers who are equipped and ready to deploy globally. These teams offer world-class Underwater Force Protection (UWFP) and Maritime Explosive Ordnance Disposal (MEOD) capabilities to ensure the security of Royal Navy assets against conventional and improvised maritime threats.

Delta Squadron

Role

Delta Squadron is a globally deployable clearance diving unit, maintained at very high readiness. Their primary mission is to deliver UWFP, MEOD, and In-Water Maintenance and Repair (IWMAR) support to the Fleet. They also operate as part of Maritime Task Groups or Joint Task Forces, providing critical underwater capabilities when needed.

Delta Squadron combines expert search diving techniques with advanced maritime ordnance disposal capabilities to safeguard Fleet units in ports worldwide. Their expertise includes deterrence and neutralization of underwater threats, both conventional and improvised.

Key capabilities include:

  • Maritime Explosive Ordnance Disposal (M-EOD)
  • Maritime Improvised Explosive Device Disposal (M-IEDD)
  • Underwater Force Protection (UWFP)
  • In-Water Maintenance and Repair (IWMAR)

Crew

Under the leadership of Lt Cdr Shaun Dodd RN, Delta Squadron is comprised of 55 personnel, divided into Delta Diving Units 1 and 2 (DDU1 and DDU2), including an organic engineering support element. Each unit is assigned to a Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carrier and led by an Officer-in-Charge (OiC).

Supported by medical, logistics, and communications enablers, Delta Squadron remains on standby year-round, prepared to deploy at any time. Their mission is to support independent Fleet units or operate as part of Maritime or Joint Task Groups, working on, under, or near Royal Navy vessels anywhere in the world.
