HMS Smiter (P272) is one of 16 Archer-class patrol vessels assigned to the Coastal Forces Squadron, providing maritime security and operations within Europe’s coastal waters.

Role

HMS Smiter (P272) is part of Coastal Forces Squadron (West), based in HMNB Devonport. The Ship, operated by a small team of 5 sailors and led by an experienced Lieutenant, regularly contributes to Operational Sea Training and Regional Engagement throughout Southwest England and Wales. HMS Smiter also supports Maritime Security operations around the UK and multinational exercises throughout Northern Europe, Scandinavia, and the Baltics.

Capability

HMS Smiter’s shallow draught and small dimensions, allow the Ship to operate in confined coastal waters throughout Europe and more recently the Norwegian Fjords. A very manoeuvrable unit able to embark up to 15 persons and various uncrewed vehicles, HMS SMITER is often utilised as a force insertion or command and control platform in various national and international exercises.

HMS Smiter can accommodate up to 15 extra personnel in addition to the 5 Ship’s Company already embarked. These additional people can be specialist teams, trainee Officers and Ratings, or RN Reserves.
