HMS Explorer (P164) is one of 16 Archer-class patrol vessels assigned to the Coastal Forces Squadron, providing maritime security and operations within Europe’s coastal waters. 

Role

HMS Explorer (P164) is part of Coastal Forces Squadron (East), based in Newcastle. The ship, operated by a small team of 5 sailors and led by an experienced Lieutenant, regularly contributes to developing partnerships with UK and NATO forces, conducting exercises around the UK, Norway and the Baltic Sea.

Capability

Explorer plays a unique and valued role engaging the public, inspiring the next generation and getting involved in Baltic operations.

  • Young people who are interested in the Royal Navy learn about leadership and fraternity as they gain practical skills.
  • Though just 21 metres long, Explorer has deployed as far as the Baltic.
  • She also plays an important role representing the Royal Navy in smaller ports where larger ships in the fleet are unable to visit.
  • The Ship’s Company are skilled outside of their core roles – Engineers handle lines while working Part of Ship, and Warfare Ratings cook meals for everyone.

The crew of HMS Explorer include engineers and seaman specialists with experience from around the fleet and can accommodate up to 15 additional personnel ranging from specialist teams, trainee Officers and Ratings and students.
