The Plymouth-based Type 23 represented the UK as the Elbe waterfront was transformed into a colourful maritime festival, taking her place next to cruise ships, museum vessels, tall ships and other naval craft.
Sutherland – currently undergoing intensive trials ahead of a return to full operations later this year – served as a floating venue to showcase the UK’s contribution to the events, hosting His Majesty’s Ambassador to Germany, Andrew Mitchell, the Mayor of Liverpool City Region, Mr Steve Rotheram and a variety of other organisations as part of the visit.
Events ashore included attendance at the International Ecumenical Service and Flag Parade, with HMS Sutherland leading a coordinated Ceremonial Sunset event alongside the German’s FGS Rhein.
The five-day visit concluded with a Ship Open to Visitors event, welcoming more than 5,000 members of the public on board to witness demonstrations including weapons preparations, emergency first aid, and sea boat capability.
HMS Sutherland’s Commanding Officer, Commander Kris White, said: “It has been an honour to represent the Royal Navy at this year’s Port Anniversary which celebrates Hamburg’s maritime heritage and its role in the city’s prosperity.
“The ship’s company enjoyed Hamburg’s warm welcome and the visit provided the opportunity to foster bonds of friendship and cooperation with mariners, both military and civilian, from other likeminded nations.”
Deputy Defence and Naval Attaché to Germany Captain Phil Tilden RN added: “The Hamburg Harbour Birthday showcased the strength and depth of the UK–Germany partnership and we are proud to have supported Liverpool City Region in forging closer ties with Hamburg.
“We are especially grateful to the crew of HMS Sutherland whose outstanding hospitality and professionalism helped elevate the delegation’s programme, enrich the Birthday celebrations, and underscore our shared economic and cultural ambitions with the region and Germany as a whole.”
Sutherland’s visit to Hamburg comes at a time of increased cooperation between the UK and Germany on matters of defence, working closely to reinforce Euro-Atlantic security and building long-term partnerships and collaboration.
The Royal Navy is currently commanding NATO’s premier task group in Northern Europe – Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 – from Germany’s FGS Sachsen, together contributing to the collective security of the region’s strategic waterway and chokepoints.
The task force is one of four standing NATO maritime groups providing continuous maritime presence and readiness in peacetime, crisis and conflict.
This latest SNMG1 deployment maximises the complementary strengths of both Allies, pairing experienced British maritime leadership with one of the German Navy’s most capable air-defence frigates.
