The Wildcat from Yeovilton-based 815 Naval Air Squadron flew out to German frigate FGS Sachsen as Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1) operated off the South Coast of England.
The arrival of the Wildcat gives the task group – made up of up to six warships and aircraft – extra options, strengthening its maritime aviation capability through improved surveillance, reconnaissance and force protection.
Flight Commander, Lieutenant Butler said: “It is a privilege to be embarked on FGS Sachsen, and we are all very much looking forward to working alongside the ship’s company and the wider SNMG1 task group.
“The entire flight is excited for the deployment and the opportunities it presents for both the Royal Navy and NATO.”
Sachsen is the SNMG1’s flagship and home to the UK-led battlestaff commanded by the Royal Navy’s Commodore Maryla Ingham on operations across the North Atlantic, Arctic and Baltic, reinforcing the Alliance’s security and operational readiness in the strategically important regions.
SNMG1 patrols crucial waterways and chokepoints, with the aim of increasing security and maintaining stability in Northern Europe.
The task force is one of four standing NATO maritime groups providing continuous presence and readiness in peacetime, crisis and conflict.
This latest SNMG1 deployment maximises the complementary strengths of both Allies, pairing experienced British maritime leadership with one of the German Navy’s most capable air-defence frigates.
The group recently participated in NATO’s premier anti-submarine warfare exercise, Dynamic Mongoose.
Hosted by Norway, the demanding two-week exercise brought together allied and partner forces from nine nations to strengthen coordination, sharpen anti-submarine warfare skills, and enhance the Alliance’s ability to operate seamlessly in the High North.
