Heart of Oak ‘memory tree’ unveiled at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

The Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) has unveiled the Heart of Oak Memory Tree – a new memorial which honours the lives, legacies, and enduring spirit of all those connected to the Royal Navy.  

The unveiling in one of the UK’s most historically-significant naval sites brought together Royal Navy representatives, bereaved families, and key partners for a moving day of remembrance and reflection. 

Crafted from steel and inspired by Heart of Oak, the official march of the Royal Navy, the tree-shaped sculpture stands as a permanent symbol of service and sacrifice. Each branch holds bespoke metal ‘leaves’, individually engraved with the names of loved ones – whether lost in action, passed away in service, or remembered as veterans, family members, or supporters of the Royal Navy.

“Seeing the Heart of Oak Memory Tree unveiled is a deeply emotional and proud moment for our community,” said Sam Nicolson, Interim CEO, RNRMC. “It is a beautiful way to honour those we’ve lost – and every leaf added ensures their memory lives on, while directly supporting those still serving today.” 

For Karen, a long-time RNRMC supporter, the tree holds deeply-personal meaning:  “Adding a leaf for my late husband on the Memory Tree in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, close to HMS Victory, is incredibly special. It feels like Dean is once again surrounded by his shipmates.”
